APECS at the International Polar Law Symposium - Polar Law Career Development Meeting, held in conjunction with the International Polar Law Symposium, Akureyri Iceland September 10-12
Increased attention on issues of polar policy brings the need for internationally and interdisciplinary trained professionals. Though the domain of polar law enters many different organizations, government sectors, and private and public institutions, the opportunities for early career policy professionals within this disciple remains ambiguous. To help showcase the variety of career opportunities for students of polar law and policy, the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) will host a roundtable discussion in conjunction with the International Polar Law Symposium in Akureyri, Iceland on Friday September 11 at 19:30 in the University of Akureyri Main Building. The purpose of the panel is to give participants a flavor of the variety and breadth of career possibilities that exist for those with an interest in shaping the future of polar policy.
Invited mentors will share their personal experiences and insights into polar policy careers and offer advice to participants on how to best find the position that suites their talents, interests, and passion. Following the introductions from panelists there will be a question and answer session lead by the participants. This event will be recorded and shared with the 1800 members of the APECS community as a podcast.
After the panel presentations and open forum discussion session, which will about an hour, we invite the plenary speakers from the conference and other senior mentors to join the early career professionals for an informal reception. This reception is key to the overall success of the panel session, as it allows young researchers to interact directly with senior mentors in a relaxed environment where dialog is freely exchanged and future collaborations can develop.
Participants of all academic backgrounds are invited, with particular relevance to the former and current classes of the Polar Law Program. Not only is the event an important introduction into the studies of the Polar Law Program, but it also generates international exposure for prospective students and future employers.
