cpn_lassiAs the circumpolar North emerges as a significant presence in world affairs, it becomes increasingly exposed to globalization. Globalization and the Circumpolar North is the first book to describe those effects - political, economic, and cultural - in all their complexity. Gathering literature by leading political and social scientists, Globalization and the Circumpolar North is both a foundation for understanding this important source of change in the North and a call for further investigation.

The circumpolar North has long been the subject of conflicting national aspirations and border disputes, and with the end of the cold war and the coming era of potential resource scarcity, its importance will only grow over the next several decades. Anticipating that renewed prominence, Globalization and the Circumpolar North brings together an array of scholars to explore the effects of this increased attention, from the new opportunities offered by globalization to the potential damage to long-isolated northern communities and peoples.

One of the editors and authors of the book is Dr. Lassi Heininen, University Lecturer and Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lapland. The second editor and author is Chris Southcott,  professor of sociology at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and Associate Researcher at the Northern Research Institute, Whitehorse, Yukon. He is currently the chair of the Social Economy Research Network for Northern Canada and chair of the Research Outreach Program for the University of the Arctic. Among other authors is Larissa Riabova, Senior Researcher Institute for Economic Studies, Kola Science Centre, Russian Academy of Sciences and a NRF Steering Committe member.

The book is published by University of Alaska Press.
