The Luzin Institute for Economic Studies KSC RAS, Branch of St. Petersburg Economic University, Government of the Murmansk region organize the 5th international scientific and practical conference "The North and the Arctic in the New World Development Paradigm. Luzin Readings 2010" (Apatity, April 8-10, 2010).

"Luzin Readings 2010" will be held in the period of the world-wide financial-economic crisis. The ongoing processes can have a significant influence on role of northern regions and the Arctic in the national and world economy. The previous conferences, held in 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2007 were attended by over 250 scholars and specialists, representing Russian and foreign science, education, political and business organizations. The forthcoming conference invites Russian and foreign scholars, politicians, public actors and businessmen for discussions and cooperation in studies of the North and the Arctic challenges in the context of global changes in the world, generalization of the world experience of northern communities development, elaboration of recommendations and proposals for power representatives of all levels. The conference will be joined with the "Calotte Academy 2010" (an annual series of international North research seminars) devoted to the theme "The Arctic in World Politics" (tentative title).

During the conference it is supposed to have plenary meetings, parallel sessions, and "round table" discussions on the following themes:

• Global processes and challenges of the Arctic under the growth of economic instability
  
• Economics of rational nature management and environmental protection
• Social development of Northern and Arctic regions: challenges and strategic priorities
  
• Innovation development of the North economy
• Regions and municipalities of the Russian North: contemporary processes of the sustainable development strategy
  
• Tendencies of the state and corporative financial policy under the contemporary economic conditions
• The North under the new macroeconomic conditions: young researchers view

Registration fee for the "Luzin Readings 2010" is 100 EUR and is to be paid at registration. The fee includes conference materials, meals, localtransportation and a reception.
