The secretariat for the Northern Research Forum is hosted by the University of Akureyri and the Stefansson Arctic Institute in Akureyri, Iceland. The secretariat is based at the University of Akureyri Research Centre on the university campus (the building Borgir). The secretariat has two staff members, Dr. Guðrún Rósa Þórsteinsdóttir, director and Embla Eir Oddsdóttir, coordinator. The NRF Secretariat enjoys close collaboration with the Stefansson Arctic Institute which contributes expert knowledge and general assistance in various matters. The town of Akureyri is a growing centre of Arctic activities and events. Two of the Arctic Council's secretariats are located in the same building as the NRF Secretariat, CAFF (Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna) and PAME (Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment). The International Arctic Social Sciences Association is also located in the same building and is hosted by the Stefanson Arctic Institute. The University of Akureyri offers a M.A. degree and LL.M. degree in Polar Law, which gives unique focus on polar legal issues. In addition to the Arctic Institutions in Akureyri, the Arctic Portal website is based in Akureyri.
